The first club was organized in 1886 by Pioneer James B. Upton and his wife, Amanda Shaw Upton, in their farm home. It was called ''Huckleberry Club'' and meetings were Sundays afternoons. Games, (no cards) Charades, and Story telling and singing were enjoyed. They had a melodeon which Upton had brought from Oregon City over the old Indian trail (Galdy). It took 6 days to make the trip. This instrument proved valuable to the social life of the Pioneers. Mrs. Upton had an extra nice alto voice and Mr. O. A. Yates, an excellent tenor. When the young folks commenced at the meeting, Mr. Upton told them they could not have any more meetings. The melodeon was moved to Portland in 1894, when the family moved there. Shortly after, it was destroyed by fire which consumed the entire house and all the contents.
The ''Nesco Ladies Club'' was organized Sept. 3, 1922, with eleven charter members. Meetings are held once a month in members' homes. It added greatly to the educational and social life of ladies of the entire community.
Meda Ladies Club was organized 1921. At present, there are about thirty members with Mrs. Orin Dunn, President. This Club like the Nesco Club, is an interesting gathering place once a month for the ladies who assist in charity work and local entertainment.
In 1947, the Nestucca Valley Garden Club was organized with five charter members. The membership was limited to 30, which they have now. Members must live in the valleys of the Big or Little Nestucca Rivers and it is strictly floral. They seek to excel in propagation and cultural of all varieties of flowers.
Mrs. Claus Erickson of Three Rivers is president and Mrs. Zeda Affolter of Neskowin is secretary.
Mrs. Bessie Craven and Mrs. Jessie Ray each have an all glass green house built in fall of 1949, and is heated by electricity.
