"Short History of the Little Nestucca River Valley and Its Early Pioneers" written about South Tillamook County, Oregon
The page below was written by Mrs. Hardy Rock (Alexandria LEY Rock) and published in 1949. NVMS students have retyped her history so that many may read it. Although some punctuation errors have been corrected the text remains as written by Mrs. Rock.
Note that Alexandria LEY Rock's "Short History of the Little Nestucca River Valley and Its Early Pioneers" has been republished in book form as of January 2007 and is now being offered for sale by the Tillamook County Historical Society!

intention of trying to turn the horse nor follow him. He had not looked back.
Reaching the opposite
bank, he violently and repeatedly motioned me to come across. I resolutely shook
my head. No doubt his language was hot, but it was lost on the mountain air.
Removing the mail pouches, he came back for me. He took my bridle, ordered me
to hold my legs up and hang on to the pummel. I did. I also tried to keep my
two flour sacks from getting wet.
The other fords
were not so bad. Some places, the road bed was solid rock along the side of
the River.
After passing
through the Meda District, we soon reached the home of James B. Upton were the
mail carrier left me, and here I was warmly welcomed by the family. This place
is now owned by Roy Redberg.
On Saturdays ar the post office and arrival of the mail, I'd ask Mr. Page for two months when he could bring my trunk. The only reply I ever got from him was, "Don't know nawthing 'tall about it." In the meantime, I was complied to borrow from the ladies in community because I had not gotten enough of my own into the two small flour sacks.
