"Short History of the Little Nestucca River Valley and Its Early Pioneers" written about South Tillamook County, Oregon

The page below was written by Mrs. Hardy Rock (Alexandria LEY Rock) and published in 1949.  NVMS students have retyped her history so that many may read it.  Although some punctuation errors have been corrected the text remains as written by Mrs. Rock.

Note that Alexandria LEY Rock's "Short History of the Little Nestucca River Valley and Its Early Pioneers" has been republished in book form as of January 2007 and is now being offered for sale by the Tillamook County Historical Society!

p. 49 Unusual continued and Vessels or Boats

School children played police and bandits while Merill and Tracy were at large, 1902. Jane Bozley Franklin and Louella Bozley Sutton would speak Jargon (Indian). Granddaughter of Louella Sutton can converse and sing in Jargon.

Tractor turned over on Mrs. Fred Kiser (Dorothy Etzwiler) without serious injury. Tractor went over body of Wilford Rock without serious injuries.

Carman Taggart, wheel chair victim of polio, graduated from grade school.

Sarah and Louella Bozley married men named Sutton. Men not related. Two families (not related) named Porter resided many years in our section. Jan. 19, 1909, Nestucca Bay frozen all the way across, and largest tide for fourteen years.

John Evans (nicknamed Peg-leg Evans because of his one wooden leg) trimmed a tall large spruce tree, sawed off the top, then stood upon its small, flat top waving his two arms to those watching below. He descended safely. Spruce limbs thus secured were used for fence posts.

Chris Christensen made charcoal on his farm during the years the salmon cannery operated.

A family named Bozley lived many years on their homestead near Oretown; many years later a family named Bozley lived in the Neskowin Hotel.

Petrified tree stumps stand on the beach south of Slab Creek which have been there before the coming of the white man to this section and still remain the same and are seen at low tide.

Vessels or Boats (which came over the Bar into Nestucca Bay)

The "Della" built by Charles Ray and the "Gerald C" came in more often than any. 

"A. B. Fields" which was a cannery boat owned by Leneweber and Brown of Astoria.

"Kate and Ann" - settlers pronounced "Kate 'n Ann".

"Rosie Olsin" and "Lewis Olsen" both had same owner.

"Roamer" (in only once); "Roberts" (in twice) 

"Enterprise" which was 60 feet long

"Jack Burnham"- nicknamed Jack Rabbit

"Tillamook" - a steamer built same time as "Patsy"

"Patsy" - Each letter in name represented ports where it had docked. "P" for Portland, "A" for Astoria, "T" for Tillamook, "S" for Siletz and "Y" for Yaquina.

"Cap Ground" which came in for the first time by sailpower only - Later, and engine was installed.

"Oshkosh" came in April 27, 1910. It had a 200 horse power gasoline engine.
