It was in 1876
when James B. Upton and his brother Charles W. Upton, Hardy Rock, Chauncey Ferguson
and Watkins Bryan (all from Oregon City) made the perilous trip to the Coast
to locate their homesteads--James B. Upton was the son of W. F. Upton (Judge
of Circuit Court of Portland), and he was the father of the James B. Upton who
had a law practice in Oregon City and Portland and was one of the first settlers
to move his family to his claim. He brought over the Trail on oxen, all kinds
of tools and provisions which he freely shared with anyone who needed them.
Of the five men who went to the Coast together to locate claims, Hardy Rock was the only one who remained there the rest of his life. He passed away in 1927.
