"Short History of the Little Nestucca River Valley and Its Early Pioneers" written about South Tillamook County, Oregon

The page below was written by Mrs. Hardy Rock (Alexandria LEY Rock) and published in 1949.  NVMS students have retyped her history so that many may read it.  Although some punctuation errors have been corrected the text remains as written by Mrs. Rock.

Note that Alexandria LEY Rock's "Short History of the Little Nestucca River Valley and Its Early Pioneers" has been republished in book form as of January 2007 and is now being offered for sale by the Tillamook County Historical Society!

p. 31 Hotels and Stopping Places Homesteaders

(Part of this page was typed by eighth grader, Amanda, during the spring of 2002; the rest was typed and edited by Dean Bones.)

The excavation was only large enough for the building which is the present Neskowin Hotel and the only south of Cloverdale.  When this Hotel was built, the road was on a low level where the community kitchen stands now.  During a storm and high flood waters, the road was washed out and the steps up to the Hotel were completly smashed.  Then in 1925, a roadway was blasted out behind the building which was remodeled and improved as it stands today, the only hotel in Little Nestucca Country.  We are proud of it and of our Neskowin Resort.  We, too, are proud of the Pioneers who endured great hardship and privations to mold this section of Tillamook County into the prosperous industrial community it has become.

The early settlers had determination, incentive and love of homestead which the present generation cannot understand.  Making a living for families from the untilled virgin soil, building homes and schools were not easy burdens but were met with willingness and firm resolution.  Many grandchildren of the homesteaders and pioneers still live here.  Some who for a few years wandered away, returned to the land of their fathers.

All Hail to the Pioneers of Little Nestucca Country. We salute you!
